Stosslüften: Daily Shock Ventilation

The protocol
- Open windows on opposite sides of the house wide for 15+ minutes to force cross-ventilation.
- Do it daily, year-round — summer and winter — not just when the air feels stale.
- Take an Airthings reading right before opening up, then again right after closing.
- Log PM1, PM2.5, CO2, and VOC before and after; note humidity when it matters.

What this is
Stosslüften — literally "shock airing" — is the German habit of throwing the windows wide open for a short, intense burst rather than leaving them cracked all day. Opening opposite sides of the house creates cross-ventilation that swaps stale, humid indoor air for fresh outdoor air in minutes, before the walls and furniture have time to cool down.
I do 15+ minutes every day, summer and winter, and I measure the air with an Airthings monitor before and after so the effect isn't a vibe — it's data.
Why I do it
- Fresh air & CO2. A house full of people breathing pushes CO2 up fast. Indoor CO2 above ~1000 ppm tracks with stale air, worse sleep, and duller focus. A few minutes of cross-ventilation drops it back toward outdoor baseline (~420 ppm).
- Humidity & mold. Breathing, cooking, and showering dump several liters of water vapor into a house every day. Once indoor relative humidity sits above ~60%, cold surfaces grow mold and dust mites. Boise is high-desert dry, but a closed-up, well-occupied house still climbs — shock ventilation flushes that moisture out before it condenses on cold walls and windows.
- VOCs & particulates. Cleaners, cooking, off-gassing furniture, and candles load the air with VOCs and fine particles. Swapping the air out clears them when the outdoor air is cleaner than the indoor air — which, in Boise, it usually is outside of wildfire season.
The science, briefly
Stosslüften works on simple psychrometrics: cold outdoor air holds far less moisture than warm indoor air, so exchanging the air exports water vapor even in winter. A single air change in a typical house can remove on the order of a liter or more of water — a meaningful slice of a household's daily moisture load. The WHO indoor-air guidance is blunt about it: adequate ventilation is the baseline defense against indoor moisture and the microbial growth that follows. Because the burst is short, the thermal mass of the house barely cools, so the room is back to temperature within minutes without spiking the heating bill.
How I measure it
Before opening up I take a baseline reading, then a second reading once the house is closed again, for four numbers:
- PM1 and PM2.5 — fine particulate matter (µg/m³)
- CO2 — carbon dioxide (ppm)
- VOC — airborne chemicals (ppb)
The charts and raw log below are my own readings. The goal is to show, not tell: the before/after gap is the protocol working.
